Hello! This is our first "class" on essay writing. In it, we discuss what we consider to be both central, core issues in argumentation and misconceptions regarding the teaching and learning of ESSAY WRITING (and WRITING in general) in (some) EFL contexts. The selection of argumentation-related issues to discuss here has been based on pedagogical considerations - i.e. we do not claim these to be core to RHETORIC in general; we simply believe they are of relevance to (most) EFL teaching contexts. The same logic has been applied to the selection of "misconceptions" that we humbly believe should be addressed if our students are to make considerable progress in the field of writing (in general) and essay writing in particular. These observations are the resulting hypotheses of years of experience and obserbation of the ways in which writing has been taught and the space it has occupied both in and outside the classroom. Finally, we need to clarify that this is only the beginning of our journey (hence INTRODUCTION) and that there is more to come in the near future. However, we consider our point of departure to be of utmost importance given that it will enable us to reflect upon both writing (in general) and essay writing (in particular), which we consider vital if one is to embark on such a serious and laborious enterprise: WRITING. Hope you will enjoy (and, most importantly, profit from) the "ride".
