Research Paper: Parent reports of adolescents and young adults perceived to show signs of a rapid onset of gender dysphoria
url: is a reaction or review video about the peer-reviewed corrected paper that was rebublished on Plos One on March 19th 2019.
This paper has looked at the recent growth in young girls self-diagnosing as trans boys. Much like the relavtively limited research associated with adolesence onseet gender disphoria, it appears that the driving force behind the recent rise is social contagion rather than any increase in the medical condition of gender disphoria.
Reading through the experiences of the parents who were questioned, there are similar conditions at play than you find in many 'sub culture' environments.
This would indicate that the majority of girls self-diagnosing as gender disphoric are doing so because of peere pressure and influence.
The processes of deficiency training found within social contagion are very similar to what you find in sub-groups of those who self-harm, have eating disorders and who join gangs or extremist organsiations.
This recent phenonomon of young girls opting to be boys should be treated as a safeguarding and social issue rather than a mediacal issue until more research has been conducted.
Many of the examples given in the research are at best body disphria rather than gender disphoria and in most cases are not disphoria at all. They are just behaviour that occurrs following a period of social and peer pressure.
It is a situation that is well recognised by anyone involved in youth work in the prebusescent and pubescent age groups.
