When Video Essays Aren't Enough: Theory, Praxis, Elections | Tom Nicholas

With the UK General Election 2019 just around the corner and the first votes in the 2020 Democratic primary process due to be cast in the New Year, I wanted to talk a little bit about the limits of video essays through the lens of theory and praxis as explored by Karl Marx and developed by Hannah Arendt.

The past few years have seen an explosion of left-wing or at least capitalism-sceptic politic content here on YouTube including that by creators such as ContraPoints, Philosophy Tube, Sarah Z, Shaun and many, many more. This has been concurrent with a rise in socialist movements in the real-world (as I discussed in my video on Millennial Socialism and Centrist Dads).

Where these videos do a great deal to promote the act of thinking critically about the world (in particular neoliberalism and neoliberal capitalism), there is often less of a focus on how the insights one might gain from such a theoretical engagement with the world might lead to some kind of action or activism.

In today's video, then, I draw on the dualism between theory and praxis (and Hannah Arendt's notion of the vita activa) to foreground the idea that, if our theoretical engagements with the world through theory are to have any meaning, then we need to ensure that contemplation has an outlet in praxis. And, in particular, to vote and maybe consider getting involved in campaigning.

If you're in the UK and would like to find out how to get involved in campaigning for the Labour Party, then you can find campaigning events near you at if you'd like to vote in the Democratic primaries and would like to ensure that you're able, Bernie Sanders' campaign has a well put-together tool at you've enjoyed this video and would like to see more including my What The Theory? series in which I provide some snappy introductions to key theories in the humanities as well as video essays and more then do consider subscribing.

This lesson is rather lengthy. However, it demonstrates how using a continuum helps students develop an understanding of the structure and form of an introduction. Conversations regarding the placement of introduction on the continuum also provides students with next steps as to the revision of their own work.

Essay Writing Two Types of Essays

STUDENT PAPER ASSIGNMENTS - DONE BY ACADEMIC WRITERS

We write your papers - you get top grades!

☑ are two main types of essay: thesis statements and analysis statements. Theses are important parts of the paper. They can be papers written to show your understanding of a specific subject. Essays can also help to provide a structure and form the basis for further analysis and evaluation of the topic or thesis. Analysis papers use data or information provided in the thesis as part of a lesson. Such an essay usually draws on the analysis given in the thesis. It could be used to comment on the issues which have been raised or to justify new ideas that have been put forward.

There are many different types of essays. Some are analysis and it is mostly used to explain a point of view. Analysis essays are commonly used by professors will need to have one in order to present the argument to the class. But this type of essay can be used by students to explain something they know about. It is an explanation rather than an argument. This is very useful for students who are just getting started.

An introduction is used for the title of the essay. It is an introduction because it gets the attention of the reader and it shows the main theme of the paper. It is written from the point of view of the author and you should make sure it is a good introduction. This is probably the most important part of an essay and should be written carefully. You can either write it yourself or have a friend or professor to write it for you. For an introduction it is a good idea to use both type of analysis essays to avoid the same type of essay being submitted.
